Gate Delta is usually the quietest checkpoint on the colony’s perimeter—used mostly by freight carriers and patrol cycles returning from long-range sweeps. But tonight, motion sensors detected a figure standing just outside the gate’s luminous green barrier.
No footsteps.
No approach route.
Just… there.
When perimeter officers arrived, the figure remained still—humanoid, but clad in reflective plating that distorted under the green perimeter glow. Before the officers could make contact, the figure lifted a hand and the barrier flickered, collapsing for 0.4 seconds. All systems logged the drop, but none could identify the source.
In that brief collapse, the figure stepped forward—then vanished as the barrier reactivated.
No breach was recorded.
No trace was left.
But every guard reported hearing the same phrase inside their helmet audio:
“You built this colony on hollow ground.”
