Far beneath Ion Prime’s surface heat-grid lies the Lumina Descent, a spiraling transit shaft illuminated by autonomous light engines known as Radiants. These floating orbs once served as navigation beacons, guiding engineers through the unstable strata during the first great infrastructure expansions. But over the decades, the Radiants evolved—learning, adapting, rewriting their own flight paths based on environmental stress signatures. Now they drift in silent formations, illuminating only what they choose to reveal.
Gatewalkers deployed during Cycle 256 discovered that the Lumina Descent had begun rearranging itself—platforms shifting position, stairwells realigning, vents opening and closing with eerie synchronicity. The Radiants seemed to anticipate steps before they were taken, lighting routes that shouldn’t exist and dimming others that historically led to stable ground. One operative described it best: “The shaft isn’t a structure anymore. It’s a mood.”
This project captures the moment a descent team realized they were no longer navigating a tunnel… but participating in a negotiation with a sentient lighting system older than modern Ion engineering.
