Across the industrial labyrinth known as the Ember Sprawl, heat-siphon turbines pulse like artificial heartbeats, casting long ribbons of orange light across the steel corridors. Decades have passed since the first Ion Surge reshaped the planet’s infrastructure, but the scars still glow beneath the walkways—literal fractures where the past leaks into the present. Travelers who wander too close to these rifts witness echoes of events that haven’t happened yet, or memories belonging to people who never lived. These anomalies birthed a new class of explorers known as Gatewalkers, individuals trained to navigate temporal fractures without losing themselves in the feedback loops.
Project 1 captures one of the earliest documented Gatewalker incursions into the Sprawl—a moment suspended between cause and effect—when the team first encountered the hovering “Eyeward Sentinels,” autonomous surveillance constructs rumored to observe not only physical motion, but intent. The Sentinels did not attack… but they tracked every micro-expression as though weighing the morality of the intruders. Ion Prime had entered a new era: one where machines didn’t need orders, only opinions.
