Before EDM, before festival lasers, before “drop the bass” became a meme — there was House. Not just a genre. A movement. A revolution born in dark clubs and lit house parties where the beat never stopped.
Welcome to the second entry in our Genre Zoom-In series, where we shine a light on the roots, branches, and future of the genres we actually support, stream, and distribute. This time, we’re turning up the heat with the genre that started it all: House Music.
🎚️ Origins: Warehouse Roots & Chicago Nights
The name “House” comes from The Warehouse, a now-iconic club in late ‘70s Chicago where Frankie Knuckles pioneered a new sound. He took disco, stripped it down, layered it with electronic drum machines, added synth textures, and extended it with custom edits for dancers who weren’t ready to go home.
This wasn’t just music — it was liberation. A safe space for marginalized communities, and a raw, soulful expression of energy and rhythm.
Key Tools of the Time:
Roland TR-808 & TR-909
Analog synths
Record loops & early samplers
What started in a club basement grew into a global blueprint for modern dance music.
🌀 Subgenres: House Evolves
House music didn’t just evolve — it multiplied. Today, it’s one of the most diverse electronic ecosystems out there.
🔸 Deep House
Smooth, soulful, mellow. Think jazzy chords and laid-back grooves.
🔸 Progressive House
Layered, melodic builds and emotional energy. Miss DJ Monique’s wheelhouse — and a personal favorite of ours.
🔸 Tech House
Tougher, club-focused. Less melody, more rhythm. Built for dark rooms and loud systems.
🔸 Acid House
Squiggly basslines, heavy repetition. Driven by the Roland TB-303. Classic rave energy.
🔸 Electro & Tribal House
Percussion-heavy, global flair. Less mainstream, more flavor.
Each style brings a different vibe — but they all share the same DNA: that four-on-the-floor kick and hypnotic groove that keeps people moving.
